2. Installation
Please note that as of December 1, 2004 this section is obsoletebecause Ringtone Creator is now distributed with built-in installer for
Windows, MacOS and Unix operating systems.
Ringtone Creator is written in the Java language and therefore requires the Java runtime version 1.4 or higher to operate. The Microsoft Java runtime is not an adequate substitute and we strongly discourage its use!
The latest version of the Java runtime can easily be downloaded from the Sun Microsystems Java site [link]. This site also provides a comprehensive step-by-step installation guide. In 99% of cases no guidance at all is required; just accept the default selections in all dialog boxes. If you recently purchased your PC, there is a good chance that the Java runtime is already installed. To confirm this, go to Start -> Run, enter the command: "
cmd"
and click OK (Windows 2000 and XP only. Windows ME and 98 users
must type "command" instead of "cmd").
Unix users already know what to do :) In the resulting command window type
the following line:
java -version
If you see something like this on your screen,
wherein the build is at least 1.4, you have an acceptable version. Don't panic if you see your own user name instead of Max Kraynov :) (Actually, if you DO see Max Kraynov, please return my laptop!)
2.1. The Simple Method
The following is the simplest, most straightforward way of running Ringtone Creator. The GUI Converter arrives in the form of a single executable file (not counting documentation and optional plugins), which is named according to the format:rtcreatorX.Y_Z.exe (Windows version) or
rtcreatorX.Y_Z.sh (Unix version). X, Y, and Z refer to the following:
X = The Major version number. The current major version is 2.
Y = The Minor version number (which is increased more often than the major version number). The current minor version is now 3.
Z The Type of license. The Evaluation version, available for download from our web site [link] gives this variable the value of "trial". The "Development" license (which you receive with purchase>) is indicated by the value, "dev", and the Production license, the value, "prd".
For example, the executable for the evaluation version of Ringtone Creator GUI Converter for Windows is called
rtcreator2.3_trial.exe.
Ringtone Creator can be placed into any folder you like, for example,
c:\Program Files\Ringtone Creator. Please refer to Section
2.2 for instructions on creating a shortcut on your desktop.
Running Ringtone Creator GUI Converter couldn't be simpler: Double-click the executable (if you're in Windows Explorer) - or while in the folder in which the executable resides, type the filename in the command window and press "Enter".
After successfully starting Ringtone Creator GUI Converter, you will see the following window:
2.2. The Powerful Method
Normally, even when there is an easy way of doing something, someone will inevitably choose the more complicated one! And yes, in certain circumstances you may indeed need to use this technique for starting the Ringtone Creator GUI Converter. When you purchase Ringtone Creator from our web site, you're given a choice whether to buy the standalone GUI Converter (the one described in the "Simple Method" section) or the Java library. If you write your own applications using this library and only rarely need to run a GUI converter, this more "Powerful" way is for you.
First of all, you need to determine the location in which to place the Ringtone Creator
.jar file. Let's assume that you decide to place
it in c:\rtc. (It may, of course, be placed in any folder you desire).
The Java library version of Ringtone Creator is distributed in ZIP file format. If your system is unable to open the file, WinRAR [link] or WinZip [link] may be used. (We do not endorse either product). The
rtcreator.jar
file is located under the lib/ folder in the distribution
archive. Please be sure that you extract this file without the lib/ path.
Running the Ringtone Creator GUI Converter requires the following small command script:
java -classpath rtcreator.jar com.unwiredtec.rtcreator.gui.Converter
If you wish to avoid having to type this every time you run it, you will need to create a command or "batch" file. This is a text file having the extension "
.cmd" in Windows 2000/XP/2003 or ".bat"
in Windows 98/ME. Just create this file with the command line given above
and place this file into the same folder into which you placed the
rtcreator.jar file, which in our example, is c:\rtc.
You can also download this file, already created for you from:
http://www.ringtonecreator.info/files/converter.cmd.
Click on, or copy this link and paste it into your web browser's Address Bar. Press Enter or click the Go button. You will then see a dialog box similar to the following:
Save this file to the
c:\rtc folder.
To create a shortcut on your desktop, right-click on the Windows desktop (if you're using Microsoft Windows operating system) to bring up the context menu, and choose New and then Shortcut. You will then be prompted for the location of the application to be run when the shortcut is invoked. Click Browse to navigate to and select the
converter.cmd file (or whatever you may have
named it when you created it). Click Next and give this
shortcut a name such as Ringtone Creator GUI or RTC Converter.
